Right-hander Michael Lorenzen started the Reds scoring with a pinch-hit solo home run in the fifth inning. The prior day pitcher Anthony Desclafani hit a grand slam for his first career home run. The Reds are now the first team to have pitchers hit home runs in back-to-back games since Matt Cain and Noah Lowry for the Giants in 2007.
