Nolan Ryan made history in a start against the division-rival Oakland Athletics, becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to reach 5,000 career strikeouts. The flamethrowing 42-year-old did what he had done best throughout his entire career — eclipse double-digit punchouts. Ryan retired 13 batters on strikes in a complete-game effort to achieve the historic feat.
