Dave Roberts decided to remove Max Scherzer from the game with one out and runners on first and second base in the top of the fifth inning. The skipper brought in right-handed reliever Joe Kelly to escape the jam and preserve the 1-1 tie score. The 33-year-old flamethrower did just that, as he retired Nolan Arenado and Dylan Carlson in order. Kelly got Arenado to hit a weak ground ball to third base for a force out, then struck Carlson out with a devastating breaking ball.
