APRIL 18, 1981 — Tom Seaver became just the fifth pitcher to strike out 3,000 batters when he retired Keith Hernandez of the St. Louis Cardinals. The milestone stands out amongst myriad achievements in Seaver's career. To date, only 19 pitchers have struck out 3,000 batters, making it one of the rarest feats in sports history.
