New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez is enjoying a successful first full MLB season. The 21-year-old didn't miss his chance in the opening frame against the Washington Nationals Tuesday, crushing a three-run bomb to left field. With his 22nd home run of 2023, he joins Hall-of-Famer Johnny Bench (1969) as the second primary catcher with 20 or more dingers and 50 or more RBI in a single season at age 21 years or younger (minimum 50% games at catcher). He's one of only four backstops, 22 years or younger, to record a homer, double, and stolen base in a game since at least 1901.
