APRIL 22, 1959 — In an incredible display of stamina and determination, Whitey 14 Innings of shutout baseball to edge New York past the Senators 1-0. “The Chairman of the Board” struck out 15 batters in the contest, and with that total, tied the Yankees team record for strikeouts in a game. The last pinstriped pitcher to strike out that many was Bob Shawkey back in 1919.
