Ernie Banks

MAY 12, 1970 — In front of the home crowd at Wrigley Field, Ernie Banks was a home run away from joining the elite list of players to reach the 500 home-run plateau. Banks stepped into the box in the second inning against Pat Jarvis. “Mr. Cub” responded to his daughter’s request that he just “get it over with” by launching a mammoth fly ball over the left-field wall, marking the 500th home run of his career.
