Ernie Banks

On this day, Ernie Banks' number 14 became the first retired jersey number in Chicago Cubshistory. The Dallas, Texas, native addressed the 23,601 fans in attendance at Wrigley field for a pregame ceremony. Banks stated, "I want to thank the Wrigley organization, my managers, coaches and friends who gave me encouragement when I needed it. I also want to thank the fans who have given me the cheers. I can hear those cheers in my dreams today and I want to thank the new Cub organization for retiring my uniform." To this day, Ernie has the most games played in a Cubs uniform with 2,528 over his 19-year Hall-of-Famecareer.
