Greg Maddux established an NL record of 72 and 1/3 innings of work without issuing a walk in the mid-August matchup between the Atlanta Braves and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Maddux's streak came to an end in this game in the most inopportune way, as he was forced to issue an intentional walk in a strategic effort to get out of a jam. The previous NL record was set by Christy Mathewson, in 1913, with 68 consecutive innings without a walk. Greg fell short of the MLB record of 84 and 1/3 innings set by Bill Fischer in 1962.
