MAY 17, 1970 — The Atlanta Braves were slated to play two against the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field, as Hank Aaron entered the doubleheader with 2,999 career hits, just one swing away from making history. After a disappointing 0-for-4 performance in game one, Aaron hit a single up the middle in his first at-bat of the nightcap to become the first player in MLB history to compile 3,000 career hits and also have 500 home runs.
