With his team trailing, 2-1, Bryan Reynolds hammered a third-inning, go-ahead grand slam to give the Pirates a 5-2 lead. However, the Cubs answered in the bottom half of the frame with a go-ahead grand slam off the bat of Matt Duffy. After the Pirates took the lead, Frank Schwindel answered with the third go-ahead grand slam of the game, which resulted in an 11-8 victory for the Cubs. The game marked the first in MLB history that feature three go-ahead grand slams.
