AUGUST 6, 1999 — In Montréal, Tony Gwynn was in the midst of another impressive season and had his sights set on entering historic company. Gwynn wasted no time becoming the 22nd hitter to reach 3,000 career hits with a single in the first inning of the game. But, like he had done so often in his career, Gwynn wasn't done there. The right fielder went on to tally three more hits, raising his robust average to .326.
