SEPTEMBER 28, 1997 — Following the 1997 season finale between the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants, Tony Gwynn landed his eighth career National League batting title with another unmatched year at the plate. The future Hall of Famer owned a .372 batting average over 651 plate appearances to lead the League. With this effort, Gwynn tied the legendary Honus Wagner for the most career batting titles.
