YANKEES RETIRE THE CAPTAIN'S NO. 2
Though it was the only game Derek played at Yankee Stadium where his team was mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, The Captain wrote a storybook farewell to Yankees fans. Derek slapped a walk-off base hit in his final at-bat at the ballpark, giving him one of his most cherished memories. "It just goes to show how great the Yankees fans are and, more importantly, the connection I had with Yankees fans throughout my entire career. ... I'll never forget the feeling I had after getting that walk-off hit in my last at-bat. It's something that's a little unfair because it's freshest in my mind, but it's one of those moments that, for selfish reasons, it's one of the best moments I've had at Yankee Stadium."
