In a July game against the division-rival Red Sox, the Yankees held sole possession of first place. However, with the consistent struggle for the AL East Division title between the two powerhouses, “The Captain” described these games as “do or die.” So, when a fair ball dragged Derek Jeter deep into foul territory, the star shortstop decided to try his luck in the stands by leaping over the photographer’s pit. “When I was going to make that catch, I knew I was going into the stands; I thought I would just jump over the photographer’s pit and land in the lap of a friendly fan. There’s 50-thousand-something people in Yankee Stadium and unfortunately I landed in the one seat where there was no fan. It didn’t feel too well. The actual catching of the fair ball was not difficult to do, it was the aftermath that was the problem.”
