Dwight Gooden

APRIL 7, 1984 — As 19-year-old Dwight Gooden took the mound down in Houston, you could almost hear the cheering in Queens. The teenage phenom, who wielded a 19-4 record with 300 strikeouts in 191 innings in 1983 for Class-A Lynchburg, was making his eagerly awaited MLB debut. Gooden did not disappoint – allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five Astros batters in five innings – leading the Mets to a 3-2 win.
