Dwight Gooden

SEPTEMBER 12, 1984 — Dwight Gooden’s rookie season was nothing short of spectacular, so much so that on this day, the rookie hurler notched his 246th strikeout, breaking a long-held record by Herb Score with 245 set in 1955. Gooden’s performance in the contest, between his New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates, was extraordinary, as he struck out 16 Pirates batters while walking none of them on the march to his Club’s 2-0 win.
