SEPTEMBER 24, 1960 — Mickey Mantle powered the New York Yankees to an extra-innings victory over the AL East Division rival Boston Red Sox with late game heroics at the plate. With the contested tied, 5-5, in the top of the 10th Inning, “The Commerce Comet” connected on a pitch, delivered from Ted Wills, and sent it well over the left-field wall for a go-ahead home run. Mantle’s blast proved to be a game-winner, as the Bronx Bombers would close out the next frame and take the 6-5 victory.
