Stan Musial

JUNE 22, 1962 — Stan Musial wasted little time tying, and then breaking, Ty Cobb’s total bases record in game one of a doubleheader against the Phillies, leading off the second inning with a homer. The Cardinals batted around the order and gave Musial another at-bat in the inning. The 41-year-old slugger smacked a single to leap Cobb with 5,864 total bases. “For some reason I never paid much attention to that record,” Musial says. “But my friends tell me it will eventually be the one I will prize the most.”
