Stan Musial

MAY 13, 1958 — Sitting at 2,999 career hits, Stan Musial started the final game of a road series against the Chicago Cubs on the bench. Manager Fred Hutchinson wanted Musial to get his 3,000th hit in front of his home fans, with the Cardinals returning home the following day. Down, 3-1. with a runner on second base, Hutchinson called Musial's number to pinch hit in the top of the sixth inning. The 37-year-old delivered, crushing an RBI double for hit number 3,000.
