Al Kaline

Al Kaline’s Major League Baseball career is chock full of achievements; to name a few, he is a member of the prolific 3,000-hits club, he belted 399 home runs, and was an 18-time MLB All-Star. On this day in 1980, Al Kaline’s jersey number 6 became the first number to ever be retired by his former Club, the Detroit Tigers. The ceremony was held between the day and night games of a doubleheader, and took place just two weeks after Kaline was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
