MAY 9, 1973 — With the Reds facing Steve Carlton, Johnny Bench wasted no time getting to the Phillies ace. Bench launched a two-run home run in the first inning to put his team ahead, 2-0. When the Reds fell behind, 4-2, Bench again got the best of Carlton with a three-run blast. The catcher capped his impressive game with another big fly off the talented left-hander in the seventh-inning to put the Reds ahead, 7-6, in an eventual 9-7 win.
