David Ortiz

David Ortiz entered this early July matchup between the Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners with 1,688 career hits as a designated hitter, tied for the most all-time with Harold Baines. In his first at-bat, Ortiz drove a pitch from starter Aaron Harang to the left-center gap for a stand-up double, allowing him to leap Baines and stake claim to the sole lead. The home crowd of 20,468 at Safeco Field, Ortiz’s first pro team, ironically enough, saluted David with a standing ovation for this monumental feat.
