Bob Feller

AUGUST 24, 1945 — After serving 44 months in the Unites States Navy during World War II, Bob Feller made his return to MLB with a brilliant performance. Just 3 days following his discharge from the Naval Corps, the Van Meter, Iowa, hurler fired a complete game and surrendered just two runs while striking out 12 Detroit Tigers batters. When asked about his performance following his honorable service, Feller stated, “I wouldn’t take $10 million to have missed that trip, but I wouldn’t take another for $10 million.”
