Mariano Rivera

SEPTEMBER 13, 2011 — New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a chance to join Trevor Hoffman as the only members of the 600-saves club. The Yankees were up, 3-2, over the Seattle Mariners, with the Mariners 9-1-2 hitters due up. “The Sandman” got Wily Mo Peña to strike out swinging, surrendered a hit to Ichiro Suzuki and also got Kyle Seager to strike out swinging. The final out of the save opportunity was recorded by Russell Martin, as he threw out Ichiro attempting to steal second base.
