Roberto Clemente

On this day in 1972, Roberto Clemente connected for the 3,000th and final hit of his Major League Baseball career in his final regular-season at-bat. This milestone hit was notched in the fourth inning of a meeting between Clemente’s Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Mets and was hit off Mets hurler Jon Matlack. Interestingly, courtesy of this hit, Clemente became the first Latin American player to join the 3,000-hits club.
