Starter Justin Steele kept the Miami Marlins bats at bay with 10 strikeouts in just 4.2 innings, the first time a Cubs pitcher has struck out that many in less than five innings since Bill Caudill in 1979. Later in the contest, catcher Willson Contreras, who was rumored to be traded away before the deadline, hammered an emotional go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth to seal the victory.
