JULY 27, 1998 — At age 40, Wade Boggs passed Babe Ruth on the all-time MLB hits list after his three-hit performance in an 11-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Boggs tied Ruth's hit total of 2,873 with a two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth inning on a line drive to deep left field. Wade would tally career knock number 2,874 in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI-single to leap the Great Bambino. “A little kid from Bayshore Little League passes Babe Ruth,” Boggs said.
