AUGUST 7, 1999 — In the contest between the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Cleveland Indians, Wade Boggs laced up his cleats just three hits shy of 3,000. With this historic milestone in clear sights, 38,215 home fans packed Tropicana Field in anticipation for the 41-year-old slugger to make history. Following two knockers earlier in the game, Boggs would leave the yard in the bottom of the sixth inning to become the first player in MLB history to hit a home run to reach the 3,000-hit mark.
