SEPTEMBER 15, 1969 — Steve Carlton had an uneven, record-setting performance against the Mets that kept the Cardinals close in an eventual loss. The left-hander allowed four runs in a complete-game effort, yet set the MLB record for most punchouts in a game, retiring 19 Mets batters on strikes.
