Steve Carlton

AUGUST 5, 1986 — Hall-of-Fame hurler Steve Carlton collected a jaw-dropping 4,136 strikeouts over the course of his more than two-decade-long career, but on this day in 1986, the veteran pitcher notched his 4,000th. This milestone strikeout came in a contest between Carlton’s San Francisco Giants and the Cincinnati Reds, when he whiffed batter Eric Davis in the third inning. Notably, this historic whiff made Carlton just the second player in MLB history to notch 4,000 strikeouts.
