MAY 20, 1983 — Philadelphia Phillies starter Steve Carlton took the mound against the San Diego Padres looking to move up on Baseball's all-time strikeout leaderboard. Despite taking a loss, the left-handed ace tossed eight quality innings and racked up four strikeouts. Carlton's effort was good enough to pass Walter Johnson with 3,511 career strikeouts.
