AUGUST 15, 1990 — Despite his 0-for-4 start in the contest between the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox, Mark McGwire had a chance to redeem himself in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Pomona, California, slugger stepped up the plate with the score tied, 2-2, with the bases loaded. McGwire only needed one pitch from Daryl Irvine to end the game, as he connected for a walk-off grand slam that traveled well into the left-field stands at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
