Pitching in the 20th season of his 21-year career, Atlanta Braves right-hander John Smoltz became just the 16th pitcher in MLB history to reach the 3,000-strikeout plateau. Facing the Washington Nationals, Smoltz tossed seven innings of scoreless baseball, striking out 10 batters in the process. It was his whiff of Felipe Lopez in the top of the third that cemented his name in history.
