John Smoltz

Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz wasted no time in getting the closer portion of his career off to a historic start, and on this day in 2002, the Herculean hurler became the fastest pitcher in Major League Baseball history to record 40 saves. This milestone save was recorded in a contest between his Braves and the Arizona Diamondbacks, and after Smoltz’s 16-pitch, one-inning performance, he secured a 4-1 victory for his Club.
