OCTOBER 3, 1997 — With the Braves on the brink of clinching an appearance in the NLCS, they gave the ball to John Smoltz to seal the deal. Smoltz did not disappoint. The right-hander tossed a complete-game, allowed just one run and struck out 11 Astros batters en route to securing a 4-1 win. Smoltz allowed just three hits and walked one in the herculean effort.
